Many Intersections Between Indigenous Rights and Refugee/Migrant Rights

 

The violation of migrant families' rights in the United States has brought international attention to the vulnerable situation of people who are displaced from their home countries by violence and structural inequality. By investigating this important news story with a focus on Indigenous migrants and refugees, as well as Indigenous individuals in countries who are experiencing high rates of displacement such as Guatemala, our new radio programs below reveal important intersections between the experiences of these marginalized groups.

Vulnerability to displacement as an intersectional issue is often overlooked. This radio program recounts the experience of Nwe Oo, a Burmese Indigenous refugee who is currently taking shelter in California, United States.
Vicky Tauli-Corpuz, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, conducted an official visit to Guatemala, a country where 61 to 65% of population identify as Indigenous. Shaldon Ferris interviewed her about her visit.
