In the heart of the Arizona high desert lies a battle for the soul of the land.

The ancient, sacred grounds of Apache Native territory are under threat from a looming giant — a massive copper mine that promises riches for the locals, and a pathway to the so-called green transition. 

But, as is often the case, it comes at a cost.

My name is Shaylin Salas, and I am a CHamoru woman from Guåhan, Mariana Islands. Guåhan (popularly, Guam) is the southernmost island of the Mariana Islands chain in the western Pacific Ocean. The Indigenous Peoples of this region are the CHamoru and the Refaluwasch communities. In 2022, I was a Cultural Survival Indigenous Youth Arts Fellow. For this, I was invited to attend the 23rd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York in April 2024.

Del 15 al 26 de abril de 2024 tuvo lugar la 23ª sesión del Foro Permanente de las Naciones Unidas para las Cuestiones Indígenas  (UNPFII). El tema de la sesión de este año se centró en "Mejorar el derecho de los Pueblos Indígenas a la autodeterminación en el contexto de la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas: enfatizando las voces de los jóvenes Indígenas". Asistieron más de 2000 delegados con una gran presencia de jóvenes.

On April 11, 2024, Columbia Global Freedom of Expression (CGFoE) revealed the winners of the 2024 Columbia Global Freedom of Expression Prizes in the categories of Significant Legal Ruling and Excellence in Legal Services, recognizing remarkable contributions to the advancement of freedom of expression worldwide.
